Also I forgot to mention that you are locked into Apple's IOS operating system and its proprietary applications - yes there are lots of them. What this means is that Apple will let you play with Apple devices. The Kindle Fire, on the other hand, can share apps with any Android-based device, Windows 7 devices and any Internet-ready device. So, after using both devices, the user might ask himself why should he spend $300 more for a proprietary device, when an open device like the Kindle does nearly everything the Apple will do and actually has better pixel density (169 ppi versus 132)? Yes, some users may admit the Kindle Fire is smaller - about two inches -- but it also offers the same 16 million colors that the Apple iPad offers.

Like the Apple iPad the Kindle lets you view the image at different angles automatically. It also offers the same type of dual-core 1 GB processor speed, so speed is not an issue and neither is image technology because both of them offer in-plane switching technology (the images move as you move the device). And, after using the Silk browser that is available on the Kindle Fire, which is an open-style browser, would the user want to go back to a proprietary browser like Apple's Safari? It is true that Apple has loosened the fetters a bit on its browser so that you can use it under Windows, but you still need to download additional support software to make it work with your Windows device.

The advantages one might see to the Apple iPad: Its larger display; Dual camera; 3G access capability; Larger internal memory 16 GB versus 8GB for the Kindle Fire - not really an issue as there is automatic switching to a cloud drive for storage.

Maybe for some users the Kindle Fire makes more sense. Okay, the user would have to give up two cameras by not having the iPad, but he is also not locking himself into Apple's closed system. The Kindle Fire also offers background updating and syncing with your library and other choices. Its choices seem to be larger than Apple's librarying. Another item that some users may find important, email, is a non-starter because the it handles your email needs too. It also handles a wide variety of formats including DOC, DOCX, JPEG, GIF, AZW files and more. Finally, it recognizes security formats such as WEP, WPA and WPA2 that our router offers.

For some users considering the type of intuitive touch-screen interface, lighter weight and smaller size (which are more convenient) and very reasonably sized screen, the Kindle Fire may come out on top in comparison, specially if one also considers the price. It's just that the supposed advantages may just not be worth the extra $300 for the iPad when the Kindle does nearly the same thing, only in a smaller package.

The Garmin nuvi 265W GPS System is one of the best purchases I ever made. I am constantly out and about and traveling. My job requires me to drive to a lot of different places that I have never been before. I had no problem with traveling. Finding my way around is what I had problems with because it was very easy to get lost in a place where you have never been before. I began to use maps but it is very difficult to read a map and focus on the road at the same time so that was not working out. It was difficult to use the internet to find directions and it just became annoying trying to get directions from people around town so I knew that I needed to find an alternative. I decided to buy a GPS. I did a little research because I did not want to waste my money on a GPS that was not going to help me out. I got this GPS at a fairly good price.

I installed the nuvi 265W into my car right away and began using it on my next trip out of town. Installing this GPS was quick and easy. It came with everything that I needed just to prop it up on my dashboard. The screen was also the perfect size; it was small and compact, not bulky at all. Yet the 4.3 inch screen was still big enough so that I could read while driving. I began getting directions, and this GPS gave me the best routes possible. The directions were accurate and quick so I got to my destination quickly and did not have to worrhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gify about getting lost. This GPS was also smart enough to detect my current location so I could see exactly where I was and see any nearby landmarks. Another advantage to the system is that it shows me the current speed limit so I never have to worry about speed tickets. This GPS was even Bluetooth compatible and allows me to make hand free calls. Also thanks to this GPS I did not have to worry about any traffic delays because it gives me turn by turn directions that lead me away from any possible blockages.

All in all I was more than pleased. However, I did have a few complaints though. For one, the speaker was not quite loud enough and I did struggle to hear it sometimes. Also the touch screen was not as sensitive as I thought it would be. It can take me a few times of touching the screen for it to pick up. Other than those two things I am very pleased with this GPS. It gets me from point A to B in the quickest and safest ways possible. I could not of picked a better GPS than the Garmin nuvi 265W to lead me through unknown territory.

Cleaning the screen is not difficult - the only thing is to do it right and with the correct items. And right means carefully, avoiding if possible liquid agents that can damage the screen.

* First of all, even though most people ignore this, read the manual. Usually there will be a section on cleaning and recommended cleaning products and cleaning method.
* Another important tip is to turn of the television and let it rest for a while. Static electricity tends to stick to the plasma for a while and as they consume more power, and they generate heat. You can easily check this by passing your hand over the screen, without touching it. If there is still static, you will immediately notice it. The reason for this is that a thorough cleaning could include the use of spray (but check this in the manual as not all manufacturers recommend this) and it wont be much good if it evaporates.
* The cloth you use to wipe the screen should be soft and preferably new so that it does not hold any dirt or ambient dust. The cloth should also be lint free. Avoid soft tissues, paper products (towels or toilet paper) as they will scratch the plasma screen.
* Only use a liquid solution if it is recommended by the manufacturer as there is a risk of it seeping into the screen - and then the cleaning exercise will turn into a nightmare.
* The action of wiping has to be done gently with little pressure for obvious reasons. In most cases you will just be removing dust. With finger prints perhaps stay on it a little longer but with little pressure.

Finally the best tip of all is not to allow dirt to accumulate excessively. You do not need to clean it daily, but then again you should not allow your plasma screen to look as if it came out of the Munsters house.

Don't answer too fast. I'm talking about The Weather Channel Max for iPad, and this app is the definition of running before you walk, an exercise guaranteed to make you look awkward and uncoordinated.

But let's get to the positives first: The Weather Channel Max app for iPad indeed gives you just about everything The Weather Channel on TV offers. You get forecast videos, which are also available in just about every other weather app out there. But you also get storm videos, national and local weather alerts, tweets from TWC personalities, and live traffic cams. There are weather maps with overlay layers for radar, temperature, rainfall, snowfall, and clouds. And of course, just as in a cable weather broadcast, the maps are in motion.

Let's start with the "free" part. TWC Max for iPad may be free, but by the time you've used it for any length of time, you will probably wish it were not. That's because TWC Max is chock full of ads. Yet there they are.

So even though the app is free, you feel like there's an opportunity cost just for running it. You'll gladly pay to get the weather information you want without the time-burn of watching another car commercial.

What else? The videos load slowly. The maps animate slowly. And TWC Max is so notorious for crashing that some iTunes store reviewers have taken to calling it TWC Crash.

There's a ton of information in TWC Max, but TWC has misjudged how much of it can be delivered without crippling the app. There's a chance of a sunny future in the forecast, but for right now, this one's a washout.

LED TV Review of a Samsung HDTV

Okay first the bad news. The new LED HDTV sets are great and you are going to want to get one if you take a good look at the picture. So if you are considering looking at LED technology I suggest you stay away from the big box store if you intend to exercise some restraint. They look that good!

But there are also a few warnings about the most recent technology out on the market which of course is 3D HDTV. Now, I'm not going to lie to you here. 3D is a really cool technology and it looks incredible but after hearing a few of my colleagues complain about headaches and dizziness I started to look a bit deeper. Turns out there are some warnings you may want to know about.

I'm not overly hung up over this because I plan to get a 3D TV and use it for regular Blu Ray Discs - not 3D Blu Ray. I plan to see how many reports of weakened vision and accidents from watching 3D TV first - just to be safe. Read on...

These warnings are published on Samsung literature and accompany your 3D HDTV set when unpacking your unit.

3D LED HD TV Warnings - LED TV review report from Samsung Warning Labels:

• "Children and teenagers may be more susceptible to health issues associated with viewing in 3D and should be closely supervised when viewing these images" Samsung said on its website.

• "Some viewers may experience an epileptic seizure or stroke when exposed to certain flashing images or lights contained in certain television pictures or video games.

• "If you suffer from, or have a family history of epilepsy or strokes, please consult with a medical specialist before using the 3D function" Samsung says.

• It's not just those who are already aware they might have problems that are at risk though.

• "Even those without a personal or family history of epilepsy or stroke may have an undiagnosed condition that can cause photosensitive epileptic seizures" said Samsung.

• "Pregnant women, the elderly, sufferers of serious medical conditions, those who are sleep deprived or under the influence of alcohol should avoid utilizing the unit's 3D functionality.

• "Viewing 3D television may also cause motion sickness, perceptual after effects, disorientation, eye strain and decreased postural stability"

• Samsung are recommending that viewers take frequent breaks from watching 3D TV in order to lessen the potential effects.

• "If your eyes show signs of fatigue or dryness or if you have any of the above symptoms, immediately discontinue use of this device and do not resume using it for at least thirty minutes after the symptoms have subsided"

Maybe I'm just psychotic but frankly I'm not real concerned about these warnings. I don't plan to watch 3D TV all day, every day. I just want to use it when watching a movie once or twice a week at the max. My total exposure to TV is maybe 2 hours every 2 weeks. I suppose if you planned to watch the news in 3D you may (or could) experience more severe problems.

Like everything else including watching television... ALL things in moderation folks! You should not drink gallons of alcohol in one sitting and you probably should not watch 6 hours of TV everyday either.

As Americans we usually don't know when to quit. It is estimated that the average teenager watches 4 hours of TV everyday. What a total waste of time... You can raise your kids however you like, but you are personally responsible for their ability to contribute anything useful to society. Sitting in front of the TV 4 hours a day or even 1 hour in my view is ridiculous. We need to find something useful to occupy our minds and entertain our children.

I think the above warnings are probably issued for Americans. (yes, I am an American) Now, I love American, I love this country, and I love what it was founded on. So when Samsung puts a warning in their HDTV boxes about excessive use of 3D HDTV it makes me wonder who the warning was intended for. And I think the finger is pointing at US.

Why should You get a 3D HDTV anyway?

Emerging technology indicates that the tech field is going to keep moving at a very fast clip. Even if you never used the 3D technology available on the set you purchased if you buy a 3D TV you have the capability. The prices are a bit more -but if you plan to spend a couple grand on a set whats a few hundred dollars more?

And, when you are ready to upgrade to a 3D blu Ray Player you won't have to buy a brand new TV set. So, to me it just makes sense to plan ahead.

My LED HDTV picks - Highest Quality sets at Top, Moving Down to Budget sets at the Bottom; These are non 3D HDTV set picks:

Samsung UN55B8500 $4000: - sets the bar high for all HDTV sets to beat. The buck stops here. Awesome everything! The big Samsung has local dimming on the LED's and incredible color. Phenomenal HDTV set! (Not cheap!)

LG 55LH90 around $1800 online: This set is much less expensive than the Samsung UN55B8500 model and it is nearly as good. This is my favorite HDTV out of this group and for the money - you can't go wrong here! But if you have the big bucks go for the Samsung above. The big LG is very tough to beat at this price point.

Samsung UN46B8000 $2000 online: (Amazon) offer incredible black levels and performance. A good price for this unit.

Samsung LN46B750 $1350 online: (Amazon) This set is not an LED but a typical LCD. However, you may be hard pressed to notice. This is a great conventional back-lit model and worth every penny.

Samsung LN40B650 $1000 online and is a good value set that outperforms most sets in this price range. This little Samsung is very hard to beat at this price.

LG 37LH30 $700-$750 online: This budget 37 inch HDTV does not have a perfect picture due to uneven screen brightness and black levels but performs very well within its price constraints.

Vizio VO320E $500 online: 32 inch budget display is a great Vizio LCD TV with good overall picture quality. If used with a decent blu ray player provides a convincing HD picture on a budget.

Vizio VA19L around $200: 19 inch budget display has a great image and would work well for a kitchen, bedroom, or patio set.

These are all regualar 2D HDTV sets. The 3D sets are being tested now and we will have our results out soon. If you are in the market for a 2D set one of the above HDTVs should work great for you.

The HDTV scene is changing so fast it is difficult to keep up with all the advancements. I have always felt that a purchase should be made when the technology matures a bit. I do plan to get a 3D HDTV but I will probably wait a little while. If you must get a set and are not concerned with 3D the sets listed above are highly recommended not just by myself but all over the web.

When people used to read the book Farenheit 451, they were shocked at how vividly the book portrayed a horrific society in which people burned books. The written word was banned. However, this movement to a new era has quietly snuck upon us, as millions everywhere being to purchase eReaders. When you go to the beach, you now see people holding these electronic wonders that hold countless books within their shells.

These digital readers have reached the point of popularity where the bigger question is now Nook vs Kindle, not what book store to buy it on. The Nook and Kindle are the big products in the eReader market, sold by Barnes and Noble and Amazon respectively. While there is also the Sony eReader on the market, and various other options from other companies, Barnes and Noble and Amazon have quickly become the giants in the marketplace.

For the uninitiated, an eReader serves as a digital version of a book. Sort of a hybrid between a palm pilot and a laptop, the eBook readers are about 9 inches tall and 5 inches wide, providing a medium built similar to a typical book for you to read on. The devices have internal memory that allows you to store hundreds of books on them at a time, making it easy for you to select the book that interests you, and making it so you never have to worry about having left your book at home.

Since the devices inception, they have dropped significantly in price. Originally introduced around the 300 dollar mark, the devices have since fallen to 250 dollars and finally to 190 dollars. Cheaper versions exist around the 140 dollar mark but the lowest price fully featured devices are listed around 190 dollars. The prices on the devices have fallen quickly as Amazon and Barnes and Noble compete with one another in efforts to gain an advantage in the marketplace.

One of the big worries many people new to the market have is how well the battery works. After all, computers seem to only last an hour per charge, and it would be awful to have your book die while you're on the beach, leaving you with nothing to read. Fortunately, the devices use eInk, which is a new technology that makes the screen look like a page in a book. As a result, the devices can go for weeks on a single charge. An even greater feature of this technology is that it minimizes glare. As a result, there is no trouble using the device in sunlight.

The major downside of these new devices is their limitations on sharing books. You can no longer read a good book and pass it along amongst your friends. All of the companies place DRMs on their books and don't offer lending features, meaning that people will have to buy the books you talk highly of. Still it's a small cost to enter a new world of digital books.

In the end, we have entered the era Ray Bradbury warned us of. However, the question that arises is, is that necessarily a bad thing?

Solar Flares - Vulnerability of GPS

Whilst GPS is commonly associated with satellite navigation and wayfinding, many technologies and computer networks rely on the GPS satellite system for a source of accurate time.

GPS time servers utilise the onboard atomic clocks of the global positing satellites and use this stable and accurate time source as a basis for their NTP synchronisation (Network Time Protocol)

GPS has become the preferred source of atomic clock time for many network operators. There are other methods where UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) can be used; radio signals and across the internet to name but two sources, but none is as secure or readily available as GPS.

Unlike radio signals, GPS is available everywhere on the planet, is never down for scheduled maintenance and is not commonly vulnerable to interference. It also doesn't have any security implications like connecting across an internet firewall to an online time server can.

However, this doesn't mean GPS is completely invulnerable as recent news reports have suggested.

It has been recently reported that a sunspot (sunspot 1092) the size of the Earth has flared up and a massive coronal ejection (solar flare), described in the press as a "solar tsunami" which was suggested to be large enough to satellites and wreck power and communications grids.

Solar activity, such as sunspots and solar flares (ejected hot plumes of plasma and radiation from the sun), have long been known to be able to damage and even disable satellites.

GPS is particularly vulnerable because of the high orbits of geostationary satellites (some 22,000 miles up) this leaves them unprotected by the earth's magnetic field.

However, following the recent solar activity there has been no reported damage to the GPS system but as so many people rely on satellite navigation and GPS time for NTP servers could a future solar storm lead to havoc on Earth?

Well the short answer is yes; GPS satellites have been in orbit for several decades and while redundant satellites were introduced into the system many have been used up due to previous failures and it would only take a couple of disabled satellite to cause real problems for the network.

Fortunately, help is at hand as the Europeans, Russians and Chinese are all working on their own GPS equivalents which should work hand-in-hand with the American GPS network allowing GPS receivers to pick and choose from all four GNSS networks (Global Navigational Satellite Systems) ensuring that even if a really violent solar storm hits in the future there will be more than enough geo stationary satellites to ensure no loss of signal.

Kindle and Sony both keep coming out with new models and better features -- such as the Kindle 2 and Sony PRS 700, but this article will concentrate on the real differences between the Kindle and the Sony eReaders regardless of which new or used model you choose.

First the big advantage of all e-readers over reading a book on a laptop or smart phone is that they all use the E-Ink display technology which is way easier on the eyes than looking at a computer screen.

When you read a review and the writer is talking about little things like where the on-off switch is or how easy the volume control is to use or which reader has a more high-tech look, there is one thing you know for sure -- he can't find any earth-shattering differences to report on.

And the truth is that you can't go wrong with either brand. I have used them both and they both fit my needs, but since you have to decide, there are a few differences you need to be aware of.

Here are the important differences to consider:

The Kindle has a slightly better display. It's easier to read and the Kindle 2 even has a smoother looking screen that looks more like a sheet of paper rather than the slightly grainy newspaper look of the older Kindles. There is a little more glare to the Sony screen.

The Kindle joystick navigation and buttons are somewhat awkward and not as easy to use as the Sony touch-screen.

The Kindle display has 16 shades of gray as compared to the 8 shades for the Sony. You can't tell the difference when reading text, but you can see the difference when viewing images. The 8 shades is a big improvement over the earlier e-readers that only had 4 shades.

It's easier to scroll and turn pages with the Sony readers.

These are all minor things ...

The real difference comes down to two things:

#1. How important is Internet connectivity to you and how important is the ability to download books immediately without having to connect your eReader to your computer? This free Internet connectivity feature of the Kindle allows you to use the dictionary or research something on Wikipedia while you're reading. Great for doing research. No big deal if you're just reading a novel.

#2. With the Kindle eReader you use their proprietary AZW format and Sony readers use the open source EPUB format. With Sony you can download many books from your public library. With the Kindle you have access to a lot more books including 500,000 free classics. Reading pdf files is easy with the Sony and you have to jump through some hoops to read pdf files with the Kindle.

Bottom line:The Kindle's wireless connectivity, ability to browse the Internet, slightly better display and larger selection of e-books (all of which you can download instantly from almost anywhere) all add up to make the Kindle my choice.

But my brother considered the same facts and bought a Sony eReader. As I said before, you can't go wrong with either one.

The fact that you can always sell you e-reader on eBay and buy another one means you're not stuck with your decision.

Hans Christian Ørsted (14 August 1777 – 9 March 1851) was a Danish physicist and chemist who is best known for discovering that electric currents can create magnetic fields, which is an important part of electromagnetism. He shaped post-Kantian philosophy and advances in science throughout the late 19th century.[1] He was also the first modern thinker to explicitly describe and name the thought experiment.

Early life and studies
Ørsted developed his interest in science while working as a young boy for his father, Søren Christian Ørsted, who owned a pharmacy. He and his brother, Anders Sandøe Ørsted, received most of their early education through self-study at home, leaving home for Copenhagen in 1793 to take entrance exams for the University of Copenhagen. The brothers passed and distinguished themselves academically at the University. By 1796, Ørsted received honours for his papers in both aesthetics and physics.

In 1801, Hans received a travel scholarship and public grant that enabled him to spend three years travelling in Europe. In Germany, he met Johann Wilhelm Ritter, a physicist who believed there was a connection between electricity and magnetism. The connection made sense to Ørsted since he believed in the unity of nature, and, therefore, that a relationship must exist between most natural phenomena.

Their conversations drew Ørsted into the study of physics. He became a professor at the University of Copenhagen in 1806 and continued his research with electric currents and acoustics. Under his guidance, the University developed a comprehensive physics and chemistry program and established new laboratories.

Electromagnetism

As he was setting up his materials, he noticed a compass needle deflected from magnetic north when the electric current from the battery he was using was switched on and off. This deflection convinced him that magnetic fields radiate from all sides of a wire carrying an electric current, just as light and heat do, and that it confirmed a direct relationship between electricity and magnetism. The first person to observe this phenomenon was actually Gian Domenico Romagnosi in 1802.[2] Romagnosi's account of an electrostatic charge from a voltaic pile deflecting a magnetic needle, published in an Italian newspaper, was largely overlooked by the contemporary scientific community.

At the time of discovery, Ørsted did not suggest any satisfactory explanation of the phenomenon, nor did he try to represent the phenomenon in a mathematical framework. Three months later he began more intensive investigations. Soon thereafter he published his findings, proving that an electric current produces a magnetic field as it flows through a wire.

His findings resulted in intensive research throughout the scientific community in electrodynamics. The findings influenced French physicist André-Marie Ampère's developments of a single mathematical form to represent the magnetic forces between current-carrying conductors. Ørsted's discovery also represented a major step toward a unified concept of energy.

Aluminium
In 1825, Ørsted made a significant contribution to chemistry by producing aluminium for the first time. While an aluminium-iron alloy had previously been developed by British scientist and inventor Humphry Davy, Ørsted was the first to isolate the element via a reduction of aluminium chloride.

Poetry
Ørsted was also a published writer and poet. His poetry series Luftskibet ("The Airship") was inspired by the balloon flights of fellow physicist and stage magician Étienne-Gaspard Robert.

Death and legacy

100 danske kroner − Danish banknote from 1970 featuring ØrstedØrsted died in 1851, and was buried in the Assistens Cemetery in Copenhagen.

The centimetre-gram-second system (CGS) unit of magnetic induction (oersted) is named in honor of his contributions to the field of electromagnetism.

The 100 danske kroner note issued from 1950 to 1970 features an engraving of Ørsted.

Today, the buildings which are home to the Department of Chemistry and the Institute for Mathematical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen, are named The H.C. Ørsted Institute in his honor. Also, the first Danish satellite, launched 1999, was named Ørsted in his honor.

A hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) is a hybrid vehicle that combines a conventional propulsion system with a rechargeable energy storage system (RESS) to achieve better fuel economy than a conventional vehicle. Its secondary propulsion system, additional to the electric motors, means that it does not require regular visits to a charging unit as a battery electric vehicle (BEV) does.

Modern mass-produced HEVs prolong the charge in their batteries by capturing kinetic energy by means of regenerative braking, and some HEVs can use the internal combustion engine (ICE) to generate electricity by spinning an electrical generator (often a motor-generator) to either recharge the battery or directly feed power to an electric motor that drives the vehicle. Many HEVs reduce idle emissions by shutting down the ICE at idle and restarting it when needed (start-stop system). An HEV's engine is smaller than a non-hybrid fossil-fuel vehicle (petroleum fuel vehicle) and may be run at various speeds, providing greater efficiency.

HEVs became widely available to the public in late 1997 with the introduction of the Toyota Prius and later the Honda Insight, and are viewed by some automakers as a core segment of the future automotive market.Futurist magazine recently included hybrid electric vehicles as cars of the near future.Worldwide sales of Toyota and Lexus hybrids reached 1.7 million vehicles by January 2009.The Honda Insight, billed as the cheapest gas-electric hybrid on the market, ranked as the top-selling vehicle in Japan for April 2009 -- the first time a hybrid has clinched that spot. Hybrid cars are now a top priority for every American automaker.
